What is meant by ASME ?
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) is a standard that governs the design and construction of boilers and pressure vessels. Volunteers chosen for their technical expertise write and update the document. The ASME acts as an accrediting organization, allowing independent third parties (such as verification, testing, and certification firms) to inspect and ensure that the BPVC is being followed.

List of Sections
Section I : Rules for Construction of Power Boilers
Section II : Materials
Part A — Ferrous Material Specifications
This Part is a supplementary book that is referred to in other Code sections. It contains material standards for ferrous materials that are appropriate for use in pressure vessel construction.
The mechanical qualities, heat treatment, heat and product chemical composition and analysis, test specimens, and testing techniques are all specified in this Part. The specifications are labelled with the letters 'SA' and a number derived from the ASTM 'A' specifications.
Part B — Nonferrous Material Specifications
This Part is a supplementary book that is referred to in other Code sections. It contains material standards for nonferrous materials appropriate for use in pressure vessel construction.
The mechanical qualities, heat treatment, heat and product chemical composition and analysis, test specimens, and testing techniques are all specified in this Part. The specifications are designated by the letters 'SB' and a number derived from the ASTM 'B' specifications.
Part C — Specifications for Welding Rods, Electrodes, and Filler Metals
This Part is a supplementary book that is referred to in other Code sections. For welding rods, filler metals, and electrodes used in the building of pressure vessels, it covers mechanical properties, heat treatment, heat and product chemical composition and analysis, test specimens, and testing techniques.
The 'SFA' and a number from the American Welding Society (AWS) requirements are used to indicate the specifications in this Part.
