ISO 9001:2015 - What is a quality management system?

ISO 9001 is defined as an international standard specifying the requirements of a quality management system (QMS). Organizations use this standard to demonstrate their ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements. This is the most popular standard in the ISO 9000 series and is the only standard in the series that organizations can certify.

ISO 9001 was first issued in 1987 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), an international organization made up of national standards bodies from over 160 countries. The current version of ISO 9001 was released in September 2015.
